And I fell by his side, and that’s how we died,
Clinging like kids to each other,
And I lay in the mud and the guts and the blood,
And I wept as his body grew colder,
And I called for my mother and she never came,
Though it wasn’t my fault and I wasn’t to blame,
And the day’s not half over and ten thousand slain,
And now there’s nobody remembers our names
And that’s how it is for a soldier.

Resulting in around 300,000 fatalities, the Battle of the Somme is considered one of the bloodiest and deadliest conflicts of the First World War and in human history. The battle, which was fought between British and French forces versus German forces, kicked off on July 1, 1916, and ended on November 18 that same year.

I remember when that American plan was interned by China. 20 or so years ago. Thinking to my self. This is the sort of event that leads to a war. Wondering if it would happen. If i would get a gun straped in my hand. Sent of to shoot Yi-fan. My dear old pal. Who i got to know very well when he stayed with us as a exchange student. Just after i got out of high school.

Motorhead disbanded after Lemmy died in 2015, so to see Sabaton cover this song of theirs is as much a tribute to Motorhead as a band as it is a tribute to all the men who died in the Great War…

Dude when Sabaton came to Glasgow It was Fucking Glorious, I Drank by the barrel it felt like and Sang sooo fucking loud my ancestor heard me and in the breaks between songs I kept screaming "Scotland Ya Bastards!!!" and other Scotland Shit. It was my 1st Concert Ever and when I heard this there I felt like I died and was ascending to Valhalla. Twas Fucking Truth 🤘🏻

This has to be one of the best covers of any song in history. More than does justice to the original, even includes and credits the original artist, stays true to the history and punches you in the gut like no other. Tina Guo did a beautiful job with Cello arrangement at the end too. Majestic.

The youngest known person killed at the Somme was a British Soldier that was only 15 years old.
"We all added two years to our ages"……..that's exactly what my Grandfather did when he enlisted for the first war as a part of the Canadian Overseas Expeditionary Force.

I am not ashamed to admit how difficult it is for me to listen to this song in public and not cry because if I listen to it in private I always end up in a sea of tears.
There are many Sabaton songs which bring me to tears, To Hell and Back, Aces in Exile, for instance. But this cover of 1916 absolutely puts me in shambles, especially with the music video. It's a genuine work of art and I can't help myself but watch it every once in a while when I need to cry. Thank you.

I can't put the feeling i have every time i hear this into words. Sabaton this is beautiful and moving. Christmas truce and 1916 are two of my all time favourites, so moving, make you want to cry and sing along at the same time. Thank you @Sabaton for another amazing tribute to thise we have lost.
